Ever thought about buying an electric car but been put off by the hassle of charging them, or the worry of running out of juice mid journey? Well new technology in development could allow your vehicle to charge as it drives!
Specially designed roads are been tested and trialled by the government owned Highways England agency, that include buried cables and coils that generate the electromagnet fields required to recharge electric vehicles.
Such technology is already in use in countries like South Korea, where electric buses on some special routes can tap into a buried power network, utilising technology called Shaped Magnetic Field in Resonance, or SMIR.
The UK agency will be trying out its version of the charging technology on special routes only, with only a small number of participants, but if successful it may be something that we all get to use in years to come. The 18 month trial will test several other concepts to make the UKs road more environmentally friendly.
The technology is in concept similar to systems found in electric toothbrushes or some smart phones, which use inductive charging to top up their batteries. Car manufacturers like Nissan and BMW are also pushing their versions of the technology, which could see products launched to the market ready to install in your own garage, or maybe in car parks around the country.
